The Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the commencement of applications for admission into its Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian Studies programmes at the Lagos State University Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS).
The university disclosed this in a statement on X, noting that the Government of Brazil offers scholarships across various disciplines to hundreds of Nigerian students annually. To qualify for such scholarships in Brazil, candidates must pass the CELPE-Bras (Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners).
According to LASU, the Portuguese programme is designed to prepare candidates for both undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships. Applicants seeking undergraduate scholarships must be between the ages of 17 and 23, have at least five credits in WAEC/SSCE, while postgraduate applicants must hold a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in their first degree. The training runs for six months, after which successful candidates may progress into LASU’s Portuguese/English degree programme.
For the Diploma in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, admission requirements include a minimum of four credits (including English Language) in GCE O-Level or its equivalent at not more than two sittings. Mature candidates above 35 years with at least three credits and five years of work experience may also apply. The programme runs part-time for four semesters (two academic sessions).
The Certificate in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies caters to those planning to study, trade, practice journalism, or engage in tourism in Portuguese-speaking countries. Applicants must hold a minimum of three credits, including English, in WASC, GCE O-Level, or its equivalent. Alternatively, candidates with three credits in one sitting and five years’ work experience are eligible. The course runs part-time for six months, structured in two modules of three months each.
In addition, LASU is offering a Proficiency Certificate in Yoruba for Non-Native Speakers, targeted at Brazilians, Portuguese, North Americans, Nigerians, and other international students interested in Yoruba language, literature, culture, and communication. Admission is open to foreigners with a minimum of secondary school certificates, Nigerian candidates with three WAEC/NECO credits, university graduates in any discipline, and mature candidates with at least ten years of relevant work experience. The eight-week course will be run full-time, and a pass in Yoruba is not compulsory.
