Yakubu Gowon University Promotes 104 Academic Staff, Records Highest Professorial Elevation in History

The University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has promoted 104 academic staff to professorial rank, the highest in its history.

The decision was approved by the institution’s Governing Council, led by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, during its 78th Extraordinary Meeting held on September 9 and 10, 2025, at the university’s main campus.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, 58 staff members were promoted to full professors, while 46 others became associate professors.

The promotions cut across several fields, including agriculture, engineering, clinical sciences, theatre arts, Islamic studies, statistics, nursing, and allied health sciences.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, congratulated the newly promoted staff, describing the exercise as a recognition of hard work, academic excellence, and dedication to the university’s growth.

He noted that the development was unprecedented in the university’s history and reflected the management’s commitment to rewarding excellence and building human resource capacity.
