The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has restated its commitment to advancing education and human capacity development in the Niger Delta region.
NDDC’s Deputy Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Mrs. Florence Ediagbonya, made this known during a sensitisation rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, held to mark the 2025 International Literacy Day.
Ediagbonya explained that the rally was aimed at raising awareness about the significance of International Literacy Day while also showcasing the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen literacy across the region.
She highlighted several initiatives under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, including foreign and local postgraduate scholarship programmes, the distribution of tablets and educational materials to schools, and other interventions designed to foster an enlightened and inclusive society.
According to her, the NDDC has also built hostels in tertiary institutions, constructed classrooms, and donated desks and learning facilities to schools and communities across the Niger Delta.
“This sensitisation is not only important to the NDDC but also to the world. Literacy is the bedrock of development and a fundamental human right. Every individual deserves the basic ability to read, write, speak, and communicate,” she said.
Ediagbonya added that the Commission remains committed to ensuring that communities in the Niger Delta are not left behind in the global drive for literacy. She also commended Dr. Ogbuku for empowering the Education Directorate to intensify efforts toward improving education in the region.
