Scholarship Details
The Academy Scholars Program at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is designed to identify and support outstanding scholars at the beginning of their academic careers. The program specifically seeks individuals whose work demonstrates excellence in the social sciences, combined with expertise in the language, history, and cultural understanding of countries or regions outside the United States and Canada.
The program values research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and sheds light on comparative, transnational, or domestic issues. Academy Scholars are part of an elite academic community, distinguished by originality, initiative, and the potential to shape impactful careers in leading research universities and international organizations.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Harvard University Academy Scholars Program 2026, applicants must:
- Hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree (completed within two years of the program’s start date of August 1, 2026).
- Be an advanced doctoral candidate in the social sciences nearing dissertation completion (must provide degree conferral documentation by June 30, 2026).
- Not have previously held or completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship.
Scholarship Benefits
The Harvard Academy Scholars Program provides:
- Annual Stipend: $80,000 for each Academy Scholar.
- Appointment: Two-year in-residence fellowship, to be completed within a three-year period.
- Flexibility: Between Year 1 and Year 2, fellows may apply for a one-time leave (up to 12 months) to accept or continue a tenure-track teaching position.
- Conditions: Scholars may not accept other sources of funding, awards, or professional obligations during the fellowship period.
Required Documents
Applicants must prepare the following for submission:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV), including a list of publications.
- Research Proposal (maximum 2000 words), outlining objectives, methodology, and disciplinary approach.
- One Scholarly Writing Sample (up to 50 pages in English, such as a dissertation chapter or a peer-reviewed article).
- PhD Program Transcript.
- Three Letters of Recommendation, to be uploaded confidentially by referees by September 20, 2025.
