The Federal Government has launched a new digital portal aimed at improving the registration, licensing, and professional development processes for teachers in Nigeria. The initiative also introduces measures to enhance accountability and ensure safer learning environments across the country.
Speaking at the launch event in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, explained that the new system is part of a broader Strategic Vision for Nigerian Teachers. He noted that the reforms are designed to professionalise the teaching sector and uphold ethical standards.
A key component of the initiative is the introduction of a mandatory Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification System, which teachers will be required to complete before receiving certification or renewing their licenses. Dr. Alausa emphasized that this measure is not punitive, but rather a step toward protecting students and maintaining the integrity of classrooms.
Private schools will also be required to verify the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) clearance of their teaching staff through the secure digital portal.
TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, highlighted that the portal is part of her 100-day action plan to digitise the council’s operations. She stated that teachers can now register, view results, and print certificates online, eliminating the need for physical visits to state offices.
Dr. Soyombo further explained that the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) has been revised to focus on five core areas: foundational mathematics, literacy, digital literacy, safeguarding, and pedagogy. An AI-powered lesson plan generator is also expected to be introduced by October.
According to her, the initiative is expected to boost the number of TRCN-certified teachers by 50%, enhance child protection, and align Nigeria’s teaching standards with international best practices.
Dr. Patrick Adeleye, CEO of TeckPlus Digital Solutions and the platform’s technology partner, noted that the portal addresses long-standing challenges in managing teacher data. He explained that the new system offers accurate national data under the Education Management Information System (EMIS) framework.
International partners expressed support for the reforms. Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council, described the initiative as a key step in transforming Nigeria’s education landscape. Ian Attfield of the British High Commission added that the portal would contribute to improved teacher motivation and better data management.
Mohammed Isa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, recommended the inclusion of accessibility features such as screen readers, sign language, and digital braille to ensure inclusivity in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
