Scholarship Details
The University of Canberra offers a limited number of University Research Scholarships to support highly qualified individuals in pursuing a full-time Higher Degree by Research. These scholarships are open to both domestic students (Australian citizens, permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens) and international applicants. Graduate Research oversees the application and administration processes, while the University Research Scholarship Committee manages the selection and award of the scholarships.
The scholarships are awarded under the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships and the UC Higher Degree by Research Stipend Scholarships, and they are aimed at fostering academic excellence and research capacity.
Applicants who are granted the scholarship and are beginning their PhD studies, especially those with strong academic backgrounds—such as First-Class Honours or equivalent Master’s degrees with significant research components—will be prioritized. Other priority groups include currently enrolled PhD students who have passed Confirmation of Candidature, applicants selected for the National Industry PhD Program, and Indigenous Australian PhD candidates.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the University of Canberra Research Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be domestic or international students (Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen included)
- Not have held an Australian Government-funded research scholarship for more than 6 months previously
The following applicants will be prioritized for the scholarship:
- Those approved for PhD admission with an Australian First-Class Honours degree or equivalent qualification (e.g., Master’s by coursework with a 25% research project and a result of at least 80%)
- Current PhD candidates who have achieved Confirmation of Candidature and completed less than 2 years of research (EFT)
- Candidates selected under the National Industry PhD Program – Industry Linked stream
- Indigenous Australian applicants admitted to a PhD program
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants of the University of Canberra Research Scholarship will receive:
- A tax-free stipend of $36,225 per annum (2025 rate) to support living costs
- Full tuition sponsorship may be granted to international candidates
- Offshore international candidates will be back-paid their stipends once they arrive on campus in Canberra, Australia
- Duration of funding is 3.5 years
