The Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all academic and administrative activities indefinitely due to the ongoing industrial action launched by the university’s staff unions.
The decision was reached during an emergency virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, following the strike action which began on Thursday under the aegis of the university’s Joint Action Committee (JAC). The committee comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The indefinite strike was declared over unresolved welfare-related demands, which the unions say are directed at the Lagos State Government, not the university management.
In an official statement released by LASU’s spokesperson, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the university noted that it had been actively mediating between the striking unions and the state government. According to her, a mediation meeting was held on Friday, August 1, at the office of the State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, who also chaired the session. The meeting included representatives from LASU management, JAC, and relevant state ministries, and concluded with an agreement to reconvene for further consultations on Thursday.
Following a review of the situation, the University Senate resolved to postpone the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, which were originally scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4, 2025. It also announced the immediate suspension of all university activities until further notice.
Additionally, the university has directed all students residing in hostels across its Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses to vacate the premises by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The statement urged all members of the LASU community, especially students, to remain calm and law-abiding during this period of industrial action.
