More than 30,000 students from public junior secondary schools across Lagos State took part in an Artificial Intelligence-powered mathematics competition aimed at enhancing learning outcomes through technology.

The initiative, organised by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with international edtech company Darsel, was designed to support students in improving their mathematics skills using an AI-driven chatbot. Top-performing students and schools were recognised for their active participation and exceptional performance during the programme.

At an award ceremony held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dokumu Adegbite, commended the students’ efforts, noting that the initiative was not only about improving math skills but also about addressing broader social issues through education. She encouraged students and teachers to remain committed to self-improvement and called on winning schools to continue striving for excellence.

Wunmi Tolu-Alalade, the Country Implementation Partner at Darsel, explained that the goal of the programme was to strengthen students’ understanding of mathematics and contribute to improving the overall quality of education in Lagos. She emphasized the need for continued government support and highlighted that the challenge runs throughout the academic year.

According to Tolu-Alalade, the initiative required students to use the chatbot for just 15 minutes daily to practice mathematics, and winners were selected based on their consistent engagement and performance.

For the 2024/2025 academic year, Kareem Olamide of Isasi Junior Grammar School (District V) emerged as the overall best student. Olabiyi Glory from Ojodu Junior Grammar School (District VI) came second, while Quadri Suleton Ajadi of Iba-Housing Estate Junior Secondary School (District V) took third place.

In the school category, Ojodu Junior Grammar School, Dr Lucas Memorial Junior High School, and Isasi Junior Grammar School were awarded first, second, and third positions respectively.
