Dr. Dylan Maag at West Texas A&M University is seeking passionate M.S. students interested in herpetology, spatial ecology, and behavioral ecology to join a research project focusing on Western Massasauga Rattlesnakes (Sistrurus tergeminus)
The scholarship will be under the guidance of Dr. Dylan Maag within the Department of Life, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at WTAMU. The project is a collaborative effort requiring both graduate assistants to work together and alongside summer field technicians for comprehensive field data collection
Graduate students will specialize individually in analyzing spatial ecology and hunting behavior/diet while collaborating on habitat selection research for their theses, academic publications, and project reports
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the West Texas A&M University Masters Scholarship, applicants must:
- Hold a B.S. degree in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Zoology, or a related discipline, and meet WTAMU’s graduate program requirements for the M.S. in Biology
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all undergraduate science-related courses
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Be open to training in safe handling of venomous snakes and willing to demonstrate competency, although previous experience with venomous snakes is preferred but not mandatory
- Preferably have experience using R programming, GIS tools, and radiotelemetry, though these skills are not required
- Be prepared to commit 2.5 to 3 years to the research project and completion of the M.S. degree at WTAMU, as the project will run for approximately 38 months
