The Department of Ecology at Montana State University invites applications for one Master’s student position to participate in a research project conducted in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and the Fort Belknap Fish and Wildlife Department.
The research focus of the Montana State University Masters Scholarship centers on examining the genetics and movement ecology of swift foxes on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in northern Montana.
This scholarship project aims to evaluate genetic diversity, gene flow, kinship, dispersal patterns, and home ranges of a newly re-established swift fox population, following translocation activities carried out between 2020 and 2023.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Montana State University Masters Scholarship, applicants must:
- Hold a B.S. degree in wildlife science, ecology, zoology, or a closely related field
- Have an average GPA of 3.0 in biology courses; a 3.0 average in courses during junior and senior years; and a 2.5 average in chemistry, physics, and mathematics courses
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic, commitment, and motivation for academic success
- Show an aptitude for modeling and quantitative ecology or evolutionary biology
- Have an interest or experience in scientific programming and bioinformatics
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
- Have experience in field-based wildlife research, preferably in remote grassland ecosystems
- Have experience with basic laboratory techniques
- Be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team
Scholarship Benefits
Successful candidates for the Montana State University Masters Scholarship will receive:
