The Delta State Government has announced a new schedule for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), moving the exam from the original dates of June 9 to June 13 to now take place from June 16 to June 20. This change affects both public and private secondary schools across the state.
The announcement came in a statement released on Tuesday by Mr. Daniel Akiri, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, on behalf of the state Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu. The rescheduling was necessitated by the Federal Government’s declaration of public holidays on June 6 and June 9 to observe Eid-ul-Adha, and on June 12 in celebration of Democracy Day.
The statement expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the change in dates.
BECE is a key national examination in Nigeria taken by students at the end of Junior Secondary School (JSS 3), signaling the completion of the nine-year Basic Education phase. The exam, organized federally by NECO and by state Ministries of Education, evaluates students’ readiness to progress to Senior Secondary School (SSS 1) or vocational education. Core subjects tested include English, Mathematics, and Basic Science, making BECE a critical milestone in Nigeria’s 9-3-4 education system.
