As part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has expanded its annual scholarship scheme, awarding educational support to 49 additional students from its host communities, Onne and Ogu, in Rivers State. The new beneficiaries also include the children of two company employees.

With this latest round, the total number of scholarship recipients under the program has now reached 146. The beneficiaries, drawn from universities and polytechnics across Nigeria, were honored at a presentation ceremony held recently.

Speaking at the event, the CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Klinke, congratulated the students for emerging successful among numerous applicants. He emphasized that the scholarship program reflects the company’s renewed approach to community engagement, anchored on transparency, visibility, and inclusion.

“This scheme demonstrates our commitment to improving education in the Onne and Ogu communities,” Klinke said. “Having worked in Nigeria for years, I’ve seen how financial constraints can derail the dreams of many young people. That’s why this scholarship program was prioritized in the Community Needs Assessment jointly developed with our host communities.”

Also addressing the gathering, Jeethu Jose, Managing Director of WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future.

“This scholarship is more than just financial aid; it’s about empowering tomorrow’s leaders,” Jose said. “We want to see these students shine in their communities, their state, and across Nigeria.”

Jose also highlighted the internship opportunities available to scholars, noting that some beneficiaries are given hands-on experience within the company’s operations. He further unveiled a new program—the ‘WACT EngineerHer’ initiative, designed to provide female engineering graduates with intensive on-the-job training to prepare them for roles in WACT or other multinational companies.

One of the recipients, Divine Nei Osaroei, praised the company for its transparency and generosity. She thanked WACT-APM Terminals for easing the financial pressure on students and motivating them toward academic excellence.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included the Port Manager of Onne Port Complex, Abdulrahman Hussaini, who urged students to make the most of the opportunity and bring pride to their communities and the nation.

Also present was Dr. Thompson, representative of the Ogu monarch, who commended the company for the consistency of the scholarship program and encouraged the students to remain focused and determined.

Dr. Gloria Obo Dibiah, Sole Administrator of Eleme Local Government Area, described education as “the key that opens doors” and encouraged the beneficiaries to give back to society in the future.

WACT-APM Terminals has consistently supported its host communities through various CSR programs, including:

  • Donation of a 10KVA solar power system to Primary Health Care Centres in Onne and Ogu
  • Training of over 500 women in business development
  • Training of more than 1,300 women and girls in sanitary pad production
  • Multiple infrastructure development projects

The company continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth in the region.
