The Institute of Counseling in Nigeria (ICN) has partnered with Girls Secondary Grammar School and Aunty Ayo International School, both located in Ikoyi, Lagos, to host its annual Mental Health Awareness Walk.

In a statement issued by the institute, the walk was part of a broader initiative to promote mental health awareness at the grassroots level and encourage open conversations around emotional well-being. The event also served as a major highlight of ICN’s week-long activities commemorating Mental Health Awareness Month, themed “Community.” This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of collective support in addressing mental health challenges.

Dr. Tolulope Oko-Igaire, Executive Director of ICN, underscored the inspiration behind the event. “We commemorate Mental Health Awareness Month each year with a walk to educate the public,” she said. “In alignment with this year’s theme of community, we chose to partner with schools to foster inclusivity and build supportive networks for young people.”

She highlighted the persistent challenges facing mental health in Nigeria, particularly stigma and limited access to professional support. “This walk represents our continued commitment to breaking the silence, challenging stigma, and creating safe spaces where individuals can seek help from trained therapists and counselors,” Dr. Oko-Igaire added.

She further encouraged Nigerians to prioritize their mental health by seeking help from certified professionals, emphasizing that emotional well-being is essential to living a balanced and healthy life.

In addition to the awareness walk, ICN has lined up several initiatives throughout Mental Health Awareness Month, including webinars, expert-led lectures, and a 30-day free counseling program available to the public.

Recognized as one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions in mental health advocacy and counselor training, ICN reaffirmed its dedication to promoting mental wellness as a critical pillar of national development and personal growth.
