The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed strong confidence in the newly elected President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Chris Piwuna, describing him as a leader capable of driving transformative change in Nigeria’s higher education system.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, congratulated Professor Piwuna on his election, praising his proven leadership qualities, negotiation skills, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of the university system.
Oladoja noted that Professor Piwuna’s track record in championing academic struggles and representing ASUU with integrity has positioned him well to consolidate the positive reforms initiated by his predecessors.
“We believe you are stepping into this role to continue the agenda of positive change that has yielded results over time—particularly through ASUU’s strategic activism and representation of university interests,” Oladoja said.
The NANS president reaffirmed the students’ body’s willingness to partner with ASUU on impactful initiatives that promote the quality and sustainability of university education in the country. He expressed optimism that Professor Piwuna’s tenure would be marked by student-centred reforms and constructive engagements.
“We are open to collaboration with ASUU under your leadership to pursue progressive advocacy and reforms in our tertiary institutions. NANS and ASUU are partners in progress, and Nigerian students look forward to the positive impact your leadership will bring,” Oladoja added.
He also commended ASUU members for entrusting Piwuna with the responsibility, saying it reflects their confidence in his vision and capacity to lead. Oladoja concluded by wishing the new ASUU president a successful tenure.
