The government has announced the reopening of 47 unity schools that were closed in November following a series of school abductions. Academic activities have now fully resumed, supported by enhanced security measures around the affected campuses.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the closures were prompted by mass abductions in Kebbi and Niger states, where at least 25 schoolgirls were kidnapped from a school in Kebbi and over 100 pupils and teachers were abducted in Niger.
The government confirmed that security around the schools has been reinforced and reiterated its commitment to protecting students and upholding their right to education. Many learners have since returned safely and are completing their December academic programmes or have finished examinations, although some abducted pupils are still in captivity.
